Personal Performance Awards:

​Sea Kayak Award - Date: TBD
​The Sea Kayak Award focuses on your paddling and decision making skills for a safe and enjoyable day out on the sea in winds up to force 3 and/or tides up to 1 knot. Effective forward paddling, negotiating confined spaces, maintaining and changing direction are all part of the award as well as developing an understanding of the surroundings and environments we use   Please have a read through the award.  These can be found on British Canoeing website here and the download is here

Coastal Sea Kayak Award - Date: TBD
The Coastal Sea Kayak Award helps you develop your ability to apply paddling and decision making skills to a safe day out on the sea in winds up to force 4 and/or tide up to 2 knots. Using blended skills to be in control throughout the whole day, developing your efficient forward paddling, maintaining and changing directions, as well as safety considerations and rescues. Please have a read through the award located on British Canoeing website here and the download is here.

Safety Courses:

Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning - Date: TBD

​This course is designed for paddlers carrying out coastal journeys including islands up to 2 nautical miles offshore, force 4 winds, and in areas of tidal movement up to 2 knots.  This course is a pre-req for Sea Kayak Leader training (syllabus link here) .

Open Water Navigation & Tidal Planning - Date: TBD
This course is designed for paddlers carrying out open water journeys including islands over 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of strong tidal movement of 3+ knots and/or including winds of up to force 5.  It gives candidates the skills to be able to plan and navigate safely in advance water environments through the use of practical planning.  Open water nav (BC link here) is a pre-req for the Advance Sea Kayak Leader training.  Prerequisite:  Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning course or equivalent.  

Leadership Training & Awards: 

Sea Kayak Leader Training - Date: TBD
​Two days of intensive training in paddling skills, leader ship, safety/rescue and coastal navigation/planning.  This training is a pre-req for attending the Sea Kayak Leader assessment.  The goal of the course is to develop personal skills level and leadership ability required to lead a group of paddlers on short single or multi-day journeys in moderate tidal water environments with winds not exceeding F4.  Skills covered include self-rescue, rolling in rough water, practical on water navigation, group awareness and positioning in challenging situations, first aid, trip planning, and interpreting environmental features and hazards.  Please review the BC syllabi, training and assessment notes.  All these can be found on British Canoeing website here.  (Note:  registration with British Canoeing is only required for the assessment, not the training). Course pre-reqs: British Canoeing 3* standard and Coastal Navigation.

Sea Kayak Leader Assessment - Date: TBD
​This course delivers the personal skill level and leadership ability required to lead a group of paddlers, on short single or multi-day journeys in a moderate tidal water environment with winds not exceeding F4.  The British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader has the skills and judgement to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience.  Please have a read through the British Canoeing syllabi, training notes, and assessment notes>  All can be found on British Canoeing site here.   Assessment pre-reqs:  Sea Kayak Leader (4*) LR signed form, valid 2 day first aid award, documented prior experience, valid (within 3 years) Sea Kayak Leader training.

​Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Training - Date: TBD
​This course demonstrates a candidate has entered the top level of performance, involving a high level of personal skill, leadership ability and judgement to lead groups of paddlers with a range of experience on advanced tidal waters.  Please have a read through the British Canoeing syllabi, training and assessment notes.  These can be found on British Canoeing site here.   Training pre-reqs: British Canoeing 4 Star Sea Kayak Leader or Level 3 Sea Coach; British Canoeing Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning course. LR form is not required for training.
