2020 Event Dates: Oct 29 - Nov 1

2020 AUTUMN GALES UPDATE - September 9, 2020
Registration for the 2020 event is now open!!  Please see the Event Courses page for information on our offerings and the Registration / Contact Info page for, you guessed it, how to register.  Due to the extraordinary circumstances of the times, we are limiting the number of participants to 20 each day.  Be sure to secure your spot early by getting your registration form and payment in.

We will be using the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society outside fresh air court yard for the daily briefing and assignments.  Masks will be required during the briefings.  And, as an added precaution, we will be taking temperatures and doing a Covid 19 screening at the start of each day.  Paddlers are advised to keep their gear and sea kayaks with them on their own vehicles.  We will not be providing kayak storage or a drying room during the event.
This year, we are combining British Canoeing courses along side the Autumn Gales courses in a condensed format and, similar to prior years, giving folks choices each morning based on conditions at hand.

Hope to Sea You at the Gales!

2020 AUTUMN GALES UPDATE - August 17, 2020

With the strange times we're all going through with Covid-19, we are currently working on a revised format of the Autumn Gales.  We still intend to hold some form of the event in Stonington/Fishers Island Sound on the dates noted above - British Canoe Week 1`0/26-10/29 and the Main Event on 10/30-11/1.   Due to travel restrictions we are, unfortunately, unable to bring in our international coaching team.  As a result we may be unable to provide British Canoeing Advance Sea Kayak Leader training and Open Water Navigation.    The event will be staffed with local area coaches and rough water guides.   And, as a result of fewer coaches/guides available, we will need to keep the event capped at a smaller participant to coach/guide ratio.  Registration for the Autumn Gales event will be open just after Labor Day so please check back then.  In the mean time, if you have any questions, please contact Greg.
Thank you to all the participants and coaches/guides who made the 2019 event a success!

We had proper conditions for the sea kayak/advanced sea kayak leader training and gorgeous, sunny weather for the main event.  Sunday was definitely a capstone day with wind working against tide to create fun learning environments for all levels.  Check out the event video "Rhythms of the Ocean" by Ofer Cohen.

The Autumn Gales is entering its second decade of being the premier rough water event on the East Coast and is held in one of the few areas in the U.S. that has tidal currents worthy of holding British Canoeing's Advance Sea Kayak Leader Training.  Fisher's Island Sound is an amazing location and this event strives to create unique experiences to learn and gain experience with rough water paddling.

Our high level coaches and rough water guides create an environment where paddler's can test their comfort zone, gain confidence and continue their skills growth and seamanship.  We pride ourselves on a low coach/guide to participation ratio that allows for a lot of individualized coaching. The event is geared towards a variety of paddlers - those that have a solid foundation on flat water and have experienced some bouncy water to those looking to hone their skills in the bigger stuff.

Come be a part of a fun community and sub-culture of rough water paddlers that are empowering to be around - sharing knowledge, exploring and building confidence.

Hope to "sea" you at the Autumn Gales!
